Recirculating Aquaculture Tank Production Systems A Review of Current Design Practice
نویسنده
چکیده
tion method when temperature, salinity, disease, water supply, land availability, or exotic species /environmental regulations prevent more cost effective alternatives. A recirculating aquaculture system (RAS) can also be used to support traditional pond or net pen culture through broodstock or fingerling production. Recirculating systems have been widely used in research laboratories and universities across the country, but commercial use has been limited to relatively high value products. See SRAC Publication No. 456, A Spreadsheet Tool for the Economic Analysis of a Recirculation System for a discussion of the economics associated with recirculating aquaculture systems. The science and engineering of recirculating systems is well developed. The details of recirculating technologies have been exhaustively covered by Timmons and Ebeling (2007). This fact sheet summarizes the principal technological approaches being used in current commercial designs that may range in size from a few hundred gallons to nearly 100,000 gallons (1 to 400 m3). The technologies that support tank based culture must address five key issues; clarification, biofiltration, circulation, aerations, and degassing. Solids must be removed from the recirculating system through a clarification process. Dissolved organics and ammonia are then removed through a biofiltration process. The system must provide for circulation between the tank and filtration

Recirculating Aquaculture Tank Production Systems: Integrating Fish and Plant Culture
Recirculating aquaculture systems are designed to raise large quantities of fish in relatively small volumes of water by treating the water to remove toxic waste products and then reusing it. In the process of reusing the water many times, non-toxic nutrients and organic matter accumulate. These metabolic byproducts need not be wasted if they are channeled into secondary crops that have economi...

Over the past hundred years, agriculture productivity in the United States has reached record levels through mechanization, intensification, and automation. The short history of aquaculture has also seen a similar trend of increasing production levels in both open pond systems and indoors intensive recirculation systems. Improved monitoring and control of these production systems will yield a r...

A low head recirculating aquaculture system has been designed, constructed, and is being tested at the Vriginia Tech Aquaculture Lab. Each recirculating system contains two grow-out tanks; a filtration vessel containing a microscreen drum filter; and four rotating biological contactor (RBC) biofilters; sixteen airlift pumps (eight per tank); a regenerative blower with air lines, vacuum lines, a...

This study was conducted in order to compare the hornwort aquatic plant (Ceratophyllum demersum) with an artificial filter for purification in a recirculating aquaculture system (RAS). At first, the fluctuation of nitrogen components of the water reuse system equipped with artificial filtration was evaluated. Experiments were performed during three months. The hornwort aquatic plant was collect...
